DFEi Journalism student Peter Boyd speaks about disability awareness in the workplace. As a member of Arthritis Ireland, he along with other groups representing people with disabilities are calling on the government to modify how disability allowances are paid. In this interview Peter suggests that a grace period is needed where those returning to work with disabilities can keep their allowance while working for the first 6 weeks. This would allow enough time to see if they can do the job. The present structure discourages many from taking up employment as they are afraid they will lose their benefits permanently and if the job doesn't work out they will not be entitled to benefits again.
