On Friday 1st February, staff and learners from the Animal Health courses at DFEi braved the elements with their happy pooches to raise much needed funds for Irish Animal charities, in particular the DSPCA and the Donkey Sanctuary in Cork.
Animal welfare charities have been hit by the recession and are also experiencing a rise in animal cruelty and neglect. A particular area of concern for the DSPCA has been the plight of neglected and often starving horses in Dublin's suburban estates.
Hannah Dowling, course coordinator, led the sponsored walk around Dún Laoghaire and is delighted with the results, having raised nearly €2,000 at last count. At this point, Hannah is confident that last year's total of €2,300 will be trumped. "It was a fantastic day, and particular thanks should go to Laura Smith (Animal Health Care Level 6) and Mai-Zoo for providing goodie-bags for the participating dogs".
