Arts, Culture and History Students visit the Genealogical Society of Ireland Archive.
The Arts, Culture and History students discovered a new repository of genealogical and history sources when they visited the Archives of the Genealogical Society of Ireland located on the site of the old Carlisle Pier in Dún Laoghaire.
The learners were greeted by Barry O’Connor of the GSI who gave a brief history of the society since its foundation in 1990, to accommodate the increasing interest in family History.
The archive which is home to a huge range of Irish and international source material for those interested in family or local history includes Thom’s Street directories; Cemetery burial records and memorial inscriptions; estate records; school records; books; journals and family histories. It also provides computer access to many of the on-line sources now available via the internet.
The learners left with wealth of information which should certainly give them food for thought when completing the heritage subjects covered on their course.
